Mind your own business

There are things that you know should not bother you much if at all but they still nag at you. I am aware that some people just cannot help being stupid and nosy or both. However, try as I might, I cannot stop getting irked with these people. You know people who know everything and assume you know nothing because you just prefer not to share your wisdom and life experiences with them.

Not so long ago, I met a person who I assume was having problems with his wife. He began asking me about what I like to do in my spare time. I told him that if I was not in classes or running around town, I would be on various networking sites or reading a book. He then asked what my husband likes to do in his spare time and I told him. Most people know that my husband has been working on his Land Cruiser engine overhaul for a while now – work, weather and availability of parts have been slowing him down for the past several years. Anyway, this person suddenly looked at me and said, “You both need to find something to do together!” I was taken aback at this remark because it was not any of his business if we did anything together at all. With great effort, I calmly said we do things together although what I really wanted to say was, “Fuck off; it is none of your business.” Almost immediately, he asked what sorts of things – as if I needed to prove myself to him. I rattled off the list of things we do together and they included everything you can possibly imagine. We even go to the hardware store and Victoria’s Secret together. At the mention of visiting Victoria’s Secret with my husband, this person stared and asked, “Your husband likes to go shopping?” I told him yes, he does like to go shopping and he has rather fond memories of shopping at various shopping malls across the country and around the world. That statement shut him up and I saw a thoughtful look on his face. I wanted to ask if he was fighting with his wife about his lack of interest in her activities or her lack of interest in what he likes to do but I chose to shut my mouth. The world does not need another Miss-Know-It-All.

I do believe people these days do not know when to shut their mouths. Everybody seems to have some type of advice to say to everyone else. I wish they would all shut the fuck up and mind their own business. No, really, do some investigating in a very subtle manner. Don’t just go out there and blurt out unwanted advice. You are making a fool of yourself. The other person may not say it to your face but that person is laughing at you for being ridiculously stupid. Of course, you get to be the day’s topic of ridicule. Think before you speak, please.
